(A special note to those who are coming to this page from some wacky conspiracy website. This posting was meant to honor President Gerald Ford for his noble association with Masonic organizations and their principles. Freemasonry is a fraternity dedicated to making good men better by inspiring in them a deep sense of morality and duty of service to their fellow man. President Gerald R. Ford was Initiated in Malta Lodge No. 465 in Grand Rapids, Michigan on September 30, 1949. Columbia Lodge No. 3, District of Columbia, conferred the degrees of Fellowcraft and Master Mason on Brother Ford as a courtesy to Malta Lodge on May 18, 1951. Brother Ford's father, Gerald R. Sr., a 33rd degree Mason presented the lambskin apron.

He received the Scottish Rite degrees in the Valley of Grand Rapids in 1957 and created a Sovereign Grand Inspector General Honorary 33rd degrees, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, in 1962. This is the highest honor that can come to an honorary member of the Northern Supreme Council of the A.A.S.R.

Member of Court No. 11, Royal Order of Jesters.

Honorary Member, DeMolay Legion of Honor.

But his first services to Freemasonry came way before this when he was selected for the Eastern Team on the Shriner's East West Crippled Children game at San Francisco. This was on January 1, 1935. He was a member of the University of Michigan's undefeated national championship football teams and in 1934, played in the Shriner's East-West Crippled Children's benefit classic in San Francisco.

MASONIC RECORD

Initiated: September 30, 1949, Malta Lodge No. 465, Grand Rapids, Michigan, along with his half-brothers Thomas Gardner Ford (1918-1995), Richard Addison Ford (1924-) and James Francis Ford (1927- ).

The Fellowcraft and Master Mason Degrees were Conferred by Columbia Lodge = No. 3, Washington, D.C., on April 20 and May 18, 1951, as a courtesy to Malta Lodge.

Brother Ford was made a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33°, and Honorary Member, Supreme Council A.A.S.R. Northern Jurisdiction at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, on September 26, 1962, for which he served as Exemplar (Representative) for his Class.

Brother and President Ford was unanimously elected an Active Member of the International Supreme Council, Order of DeMolay and its Honorary Grand Master, at its Annual Session held at Orlando, Florida, April 6-9, 1975; Brother Ford held this post until January 1977, at which time he became a Past Honorary Grand Master, receiving his Collar and Jewel on October 24, 1978 in Topeka, Kansas, from the Hon. Thomas C. Raum, Jr., Grand Master, Order of DeMolay.

Ten Reasons *NOT* to become a Freemason

"Why I became (and proudly remain) an 'antient' Freemason" Well, I see no reason I cannot make a Freemason themed post. Last evening I attended a third degree at Naphtali lodge. It was my candidate being raised, my friend William Bean. It was an incredible night, especially since we had 28 Master Masons present for the event which was held at the incredible Masonic Temple in midtown Saint Louis. My friends Right Worshipful Brother Chris Neubold, Russ Tinker, Densel Webb, and Fred Statler drove down all of the way from Wentzville and Troy; over an hour drive each way. I acted as the Senior Steward and Junior Deacon for the ceremony. This was the largest gathering of Masons we have had in as long as anyone could remember for a degree. It is so very gratifying to see Naphtali growing and area members supporting the lodge. I decided to make a post this evening based on an analysis of blog track-backs to this site. Over the past month or so I get a significant amount of traffic every day from people who type in any one of the following search phrases: "How to become a Freemason" "Why become a Freemason" "Why not to become a Freemason" I suppose this blog has been around long enough that it is slowly moving up the search rankings on Google.
